No sooner had the BMCC4K hit the market when those crafty magicians at BMD decided to upset the landscape again with this new 6K camera! It’s similar to the BMCC4K in most respects, with a few important differences. The first being its namesake ability to record 6K footage in BlackMagic’s RAW format. The second obvious difference is its native Canon EF lens mount, housing a Super 35mm sized sensor with Dual ISO capability and 13 stops of dynamic range. Other than that, the features are much the same: 5″ touchscreen on the back, Blackmagic’s easy to use menu system, and the ability to record to CFast or SDXC media onboard or USB-C solid state hard drives externally (we supply it with a 1 Terabyte SSD). Like it’s 4K Brother, it has some nice audio capabilities including built-in stereo mics, a standard 3.5mm jack and additionally a mini-XLR that can supply phantom power.
This isn’t a shoulder mounted camera, so we tried to keep it light for hand held use. To that end we initially outfitted it with six of its internal batteries, as well as an AC adaptor. For a camera that shoots 6K RAW though, operators found that the stock batteries just weren’t cutting it. We also included a Dtap cable in order to use larger Vmount batteries, but doing that necessitated adding rods and a sled, and the big Vmount got in the way of the screen or made it hard to mount on a tripod securely. Kinda defeated the purpose of a “pocket” camera. Our new solution uses Sony FP970 style batteries that mount securely to the top or side of the frame. Much longer run times, no hand held fatigue and our batteries have USB outs to run accessories if need be.
One thing to be aware of when considering the Blackmagic twins are some of their recording format differences. As mentioned, you can record 6K RAW with this camera but you cannot record UHD, 4K or HD formats in RAW. Those resolutions are restricted to some flavour of ProRes on this 6K version. RAW is available in those formats on the 4K camera. In some respects, since we include a Metabones EF Speedbooster with the 4K camera, if you need to use Canon lenses and “only” need to shoot 4K RAW, we had already created that camera for you! 6K or 4K, the entry price for high quality RAW recording has never been better, come realize your vision.
