This is the second generation of BlackMagic’s 6K “pocket” cinema camera and they’ve made a number of revisions that really elevate it into a workhorse cinema camera. The Super 35mm sized 6K chip has not changed, and their RAW recording system is retained, both good things. This new iteration has added internal Neutral Density filters, a detachable viewfinder and has made the rear viewscreen much brighter and able to tilt. Nothing earth-shaking, but all three changes make the camera much easier and more practical to shoot with. The NDs also have infrared rejection built into them for un-sullied blacks. The viewfinder is an OLED unit with 1280×960 resolution, can be quickly added or detached and has various included rubber eyecups to suit operator preference. Some other changes? The camera now has two professional mini-XLR inputs with phantom power (and we supply two 18″ adaptor cables to use full size XLR devices). Power was a bit of a soft spot in the first generation, and BlackMagic has addressed that by upgrading to higher capacity Sony-style NP-F550 batteries for longer runtimes, and the camera comes with a power supply for long stationary interviews. We’ve added an external battery plate to allow you to use two batteries at once, and we also include a Dtap cable if you decide you want to power the camera from a single large “regular” camera battery. While the camera is able to record to external USB-C hard drives, user feedback from the first generation has us opting to use the internal CFast card slot and MidCan includes two 512GB cards with the camera.
As before, the camera comes with a Canon EF mount that includes contacts for power, focus and aperture. We’ve decided to package each camera with one of two lenses that are optimized for its Super 35mm sensor: depending on availability you can rent the camera with either the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 zoom or the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 zoom. Both of these lenses are specifically designed for this sensor size, cover a nice range and at f1.8 are incredibly fast for a zoom. Let’s recap: 12 stops, RAW, internal NDs, pro audio, daylight viewable monitoring, small and relatively light weight, plenty of storage and power and your choice of a very nice stock lens. A great deal on a great camera!
